MARCH 20
Temporary lights have been installed. Permanent lighting solution will occur after the construction is complete. The crew is having great difficulty with the remaining holes being bored by the heavy machinery. The courts are accessible in the evening and expectation is that they will continue to be accessible until the project is complete. Plan on resuming regular 5 court schedule now.
MARCH 16
Roof partially installed. See picture.
MARCH 7
Courts four and five are currently available and safe to play on, temporarily. There are no lights, and we can’t touch the electrical until after the project is completed. 4&5 will be temporarily closed again as soon as the drilling rig is available to drill the new footings for the three remaining poles yet to be replaced. Also, they will be unsafe to play on early next week while the roof is going on, date of installation TBD. That was supposed to happen today, but the roofing contractor was delayed.
So, we are still getting close, and the courts have been cleaned up for daytime play, for now. The large truck mounted concrete coring machine, a large piece of equipment used to drill these 18 inch, 5 foot deep holes will not be available next week so we will be delayed an additional week, minimum.
MARCH 6
The reconstruction of the East Portal Bocce shade/weather structure is finally well underway and making significant and timely progress. At the commencement of construction, the removal of one of the columns that had been identified as failing showed termites and interior dry rot not visible previously. Further intrusive testing of the balance of the structure identified three additional columns failing, bring the total to seven columns. The columns are being replaced with new 20 foot long, 8-inch diameter pipe tube steel columns embedded 5 feet into the ground in concrete footings. As of yesterday, all of the new wooden roof trusses were craned into place and positioned. Roofing is scheduled to go on the new structure next. Because of required modifications to the building permit, the final three failed columns will be shored and removed early next week, and replaced with new steel columns. And some potentially terrifying ancient characters are coming out of the digs!!
The EPBC board is appreciative of the patience of its members to allow completion of this critical repair and reconstruction. Significant delays with the city lease, and building permit, unfortunately caused an overlap with spring league play. We are optimistic, barring any additional unforeseen delays, that we may complete the project ahead of schedule. Late March is a possibility with first week of April a solid date.
FEBRUARY 19
Further investigation of the vertical columns revealed major termite and rot on 7 poles versus initial estimate of 3 poles. One pole near the drinking faucet will also impact electrical conduits. There is no estimate at this time of the completion date nor how long courts 4,5 will be out of play. For now, all play on 4,5 will need to be rescheduled by team captains according to the league play rules noted above.
FEBRUARY 17
Construction started Feb 17 with courts 4 and 5 roped off. Play on these courts will not be allowed for 2-3 weeks due to pourings for the column footings. Once completed the courts will be open for evening play but still be closed during the day for further construction. Overall construction time is projected to be about 4 weeks.
So, what about league play? Teams playing on courts 4,5 for the first 2-3 weeks will have to reschedule the games. Team captains will have to work to arrange for suitable replay dates hopefully within a two week window from the originally scheduled game. If one team is unable to reschedule then the standard club rules will apply and the team will take two forfeits with the other team taking two wins. If neither team is able to reschedule then a 0 will be recorded.
